Both Optus and Telstra have "Calling Cards", which would allow the students to make cashless calls from Japan to Australia (or within Japan). Calls are then billed back to your home phone account. Please find detailed information at the links below:
Japanese appliances use 110 volts. In Australia we use 240 volts.
Also, be aware that electrical goods such as videos and games rely on the NTSC system, whereas we use the PAL system here in Australia. Most videos and games bought in Japan can only be used on an NTSC compatible system; however, most large electrical appliance shops in the major cities stock goods for use overseas.
Money
It is recommended that the boys take Japanese Yen travelers cheques. These can be easily changed at the hotel's reception desk.
The boys will also need to have some Japanese yen in cash that we can use on arrival in Japan before we change the traveler's cheques. Between 5,000 and 10,000 yen would be sufficient for this.
We are lucky to have a strong dollar at the moment. Please use the converter below to help you with any calculations.
Passports
Students will be responsible for bringing their passports to Japan. While in Japan the staff will collect the passports and have them stored in the Hotel safe. They will be handed out where needed (for exchanging travelers cheques and so on)
Luggage
Airlines allow 20kg per person; however, you should allow some space for anything bought on the trip.
We recommend you take a small suitcase (with wheels) and a rucksack (the Jalpak issued pack is a perfect size and easily recognisable) of some sort for everyday use.
Washing
Hand washing of laundry is encouraged; however, there will be the opportunity to use coin operated washing machines in the Hotels.
